Fewer Jews alive today than before Holocaust: new study
A Pew Research Center study finds that the global Jewish population has yet to rebound to its pre-Holocaust level. In 1939, approximately 16.6 million Jews lived worldwide; by 2020, that number stood at about 14.8 million. Despite a 6.2 % increase between 2010 and 2020, global population growth surpassed it.
Major Jewish communities are located in Israel (6.8 million) and North America (6.1 million), while Europe and sub‑Saharan Africa saw declines. Brandeis professor Jonathan Sarna remarks that recovering from losing a third of the population will take generations. The study serves as a somber reminder of the Holocaust’s enduring demographic impact.
