History in Moldova: New Chief Rabbi Formally Inaugurated

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Axelrod was formally inaugurated as Chief Rabbi of Moldova during a ceremony in Chisinau attended by Israel’s Chief Rabbi Kalman Ber, Jewish leaders and guests from several countries. Axelrod, who had already been serving Moldova’s Jewish community for years, continues the legacy of his grandfather, Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, who helped rebuild Jewish life in Moldova after the Soviet era. Elected to the position in May, Axelrod pledged to strengthen Jewish identity, education and communal life throughout the country, while Moldovan President Maia Sandu sent congratulations emphasizing cooperation and interfaith understanding.
