Inside one man’s quixotic quest to preserve 200,000 Israeli tchotchkes

Boris Gorbis, 74, has collected approximately 200,000 mid-century Israeli souvenirs—menorahs, seder plates, plaques—rescued from thrift stores, garage sales, and eBay. His passion began with a striking green menorah and grew into an urgent mission to preserve Israeliana.

Though these mass-produced items may seem kitsch, scholars argue they offer intimate insight into American Jewish identity and the emotional connection to Israel. Gorbis is now seeking a permanent institutional home for his collection.
