On this day: Oskar Schindler's birth 117 years ago, and the legacy that lives on today
Oskar Schindler, born 117 years ago in what is now the Czech Republic, is remembered for saving approximately 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust.
Initially a member of the Nazi Party, Schindler's perspective shifted upon witnessing the persecution of Jews. He took over an enamelware factory in Krakow, employing Jewish workers and leveraging the factory's essential status to protect them from deportation.
Schindler went to great lengths, including forging documents and bribing officials, to ensure their safety. After the war, he was honored as Righteous Among the Nations and buried in Jerusalem, fulfilling his wish.
