Two UK Jewish movements vote to become one progressive group
Liberal Judaism and Reform Judaism in the UK have voted to merge, forming a unified movement called Progressive Judaism.
This historic decision, backed by approximately 95% in each group, represents the first-ever merger of Jewish denominations and marks a significant development in British Judaism since World War II.
Progressive Judaism embraces modern values, including the inclusion of female rabbis, same-sex marriage, and mixed-faith couples.
Representing around a third of affiliated British Jews, the movement champions equality, with half its rabbis being women and one in five identifying as LGBTQ+. Leaders of both movements emphasized the importance of unity, inclusivity, and the strengthening of their voice within the Jewish community and broader British society.
The merger follows two years of consultation and will be officially launched in November. Progressive Judaism also encourages open debate, including on issues like Israel/Palestine, while maintaining a Zionist orientation. The initiative reflects a significant shift toward a more diverse and accepting religious environment in the UK.
