EU cancels €3 million heritage grant for Moroccan Jewish community amid Gaza war

The European Union has withdrawn a €3 million grant meant to support preservation of Moroccan Jewish heritage.

Critics argue the move is politically motivated, as it coincided with rising tensions during the Israel–Hamas conflict.

Jewish groups condemned the decision, saying it marginalizes Jewish identity and undermines efforts to protect vital cultural landmarks. The grant would have supported synagogues, cemeteries, and archival documentation.

Some officials defended the suspension as a response to shifting budget priorities during the Gaza crisis. Still, observers worry this signals a dangerous precedent where Jewish culture is deprioritized in international politics.
