What to Know About the Hora Dance, a Jewish Wedding Tradition

The hora is a celebratory Jewish dance performed at weddings, where guests form a circle and often lift the couple on chairs. Commonly accompanied by “Hava Nagila,” the dance symbolizes unity and shared joy.

Although rooted in Eastern European folk traditions, the modern hora became prominent in Jewish weddings in the early 20th century. Some religious customs may separate men and women during the dance, but many modern weddings are fully mixed. Couples should coordinate in advance with their band or DJ and ensure safety when lifted.

The hora typically lasts one or two songs and may involve other family members being lifted, too. It remains a beloved tradition for energizing receptions and honoring heritage.
