If it isn’t recorded it will disappear: the Muslim photographer shining a light on Bradford’s Jewish community

Nudrat Afza, a Muslim photographer, documents Bradford’s dwindling Jewish community in her project Kehillah. Starting in 2013, she captured religious life, synagogues, and cemeteries using vintage film.

Her work focuses on Bradford’s last synagogue, which survived thanks to Muslim community support and heritage grants.

Afza’s respectful lens highlights interfaith solidarity, challenging common narratives. The Kehillah exhibition runs at Dean Clough Galleries (Aug–Oct 2025), celebrating shared cultural history and memory preservation.
