Italy needs tougher laws on antisemitism, says Jewish leader
Walker Meghnagi, head of Milan’s Jewish community, has urged the Italian government to adopt stronger laws against Jew‑hatred following a reported surge in antisemitic incidents across the country.
He highlighted recent occurrences of antisemitic posters and stickers in Milan neighbourhoods like Buonarroti and Lorenteggio, and denounced local councils publicly condemning Israel without acknowledging recent Hamas attacks. Meghnagi decried authorities’ failure to address local Jew‑hatred directly, calling the situation “unacceptable.”
His comments come amid broader concerns in Europe over rising antisemitism tied to Middle East conflicts, and reflect statistics showing significant year‑over‑year increases in antisemitic expressions. He emphasized that national legislation must catch up with this growing threat.
