Jewish food is making a comeback in Poland
Poland is rediscovering its Jewish culinary heritage as traditional Ashkenazi dishes reappear on the national table. Once nearly erased, staples like bagels, knishes, bialys, challah, and babka are re-emerging in bakeries and restaurants across the country.
This gastronomic revival reflects Poland’s broader efforts to engage with its Jewish history and acknowledge the cultural contributions of communities decimated in WWII. Places like Warsaw and Kraków now offer Jewish food festivals, kosher bakeries, and pop‑ups that celebrate recipes passed down through generations. For many Poles, these foods spark connection—not just with flavour, but with a past that is complex yet integral to Poland’s identity.
